Even though John the Baptist in the Gospel of John, chapter 1, verses 19 and 20, clearly confesses that he is not the Messiah, this question is still surprising.
Surprising, because it shows that the Pharisees apparently seriously considered that John might be the Messiah. People were waiting for the Messiah.
John 1:19–20:
“Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, ‘I am not the Christ.’”
All the more astonishing, then, is how they treated Jesus – the man who clearly confessed: I am the Messiah.
John 4:25–26:
“The woman said to Him, ‘I know that Messiah is coming (who is called Christ). When He comes, He will tell us all things.’ Jesus said to her, ‘I who speak to you am He.’”
How amazing, then: the Pharisees who had asked John if he was the Messiah went on to persecute Jesus – the one who openly declared Himself.
Don’t you believe that too?
