Moments of Trial

There are moments in our lives when we ask:
Father, why are You allowing this to happen?
Moments when the devil realizes that our work might actually become effective.
And we should not be surprised that in those very moments,
he uses every means available to counterattack.

Because: we are not building the kingdom of God for him –
we are fighting against the kingdom of the devil.
He still sees himself as the rightful ruler of this world.

And when we find ourselves asking again:
Why does God allow all of this?
It becomes clear to us:
This is why He let Jesus go through hell.

We read it in the Gospel of John, chapter 19, verses 1–5:

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.
The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head.
They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying,
“Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.
Once more Pilate came out and said to the crowd,
“Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”
When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe,
Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!
”

So someone has him flogged – even though he finds him innocent.
In the hope that the people might be satisfied with that.
And it is Pilate who declares:
This is a man.
The same one who also knows: He is a king.

And when we go through such moments today,
we can always place ourselves in these few minutes of Scripture.
And then, suddenly, what we are experiencing seems far less terrible.

Don’t you believe it?
