Doubt in Jesus – A Look at the Gospel of Luke
It’s actually surprising, dear friends, that even John the Baptist – who was supposed to precede Jesus and announce his coming – apparently begins to doubt Jesus.
In the Gospel of Luke, chapter 7, verses 18 to 23, we read how John sends two of his disciples to Jesus with the question:
„Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?„
John, the prophet and forerunner, asks this question directly – as if he himself is no longer entirely sure.
Jesus answers not with words but with deeds: He heals the sick, gives sight to the blind, enables the lame to walk, restores hearing to the deaf, and preaches the gospel to the poor.
And he says: „Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.“
This is more than an answer – it is an invitation to trust, even in the midst of doubt.
One might think John didn’t know Jesus well. They met briefly only at the baptism. But John and Jesus were relatives, and at John’s birth, his father Zechariah prophetically declared that John would be the forerunner of the Messiah – preparing the way and leading the people to salvation (Luke 1:67-80).
So if John doubts, he doubts not only Jesus but also his own mission – a remarkable human response.
Jesus’ brothers also doubted him. In the Gospel of John, they urged Jesus to show himself publicly because they did not believe in him (John 7:1-5).
This shows that doubt is part of faith. Even the closest companions are not always convinced.
An old humanist saying goes: Good things take time.
We often expect things to unfold exactly according to our plan. But the builder of all worlds follows his own path.
He invites us to trust – even when we have doubts.
