Liebe Freunde,

Dear friends,
Sometimes, while reading the Bible,
it’s not the great words that catch your attention –
but the quiet, small questions.
Today is one of those moments.
Because I wonder:
Why were the disciples so surprised
that Jesus rose from the dead?
Hadn’t they seen it before?
– The young man of Nain
– The daughter of Jairus
– Lazarus, who came back after four days in the tomb
They had witnessed it all.
They had seen Jesus bring the dead back to life.
And yet – when he rose, they were stunned.
Why?
First:
Because this time, Jesus was the dead one.
Before, he had been the one to speak:
„Rise up!“
But now?
Now he was the one who had been buried.
Maybe they simply couldn’t imagine
that someone who had died could call himself back to life.
Second:
The pain was too fresh.
Too human.
They had hoped.
They had believed.
And then he was gone.
Maybe it wasn’t a lack of faith in God –
but grief that drowned out everything else.
Third:
They had seen the miracles –
but they had not yet understood them.
They believed in Jesus –
but they did not yet believe like Jesus.
And so the resurrection came as a surprise.
But also as a hope.
Because it showed:
Death is not the end.
Not for the young man.
Not for Lazarus.
Not for Jesus.
Not for us.
So today, I ask:
Why are we surprised by life – when we have seen it before?
