Sermon: The Great Ups and Downs
It is surprising, dear friends, what we read in Acts 4.
Peter and John were preaching in the temple – and they were arrested.
But this arrest led to a miracle: 5000 disciples were added.
Acts 4:1–4 (ESV):
1 As they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,
2 greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
3 And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening.
4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.
A great number indeed.
And yet, at the same time, it is frightening.
For the very same number appears earlier – at the feeding of the 5000.
These people had seen Jesus:
- multiplying the bread,
- raising Lazarus,
- and finally rising from the dead.
And still, after Easter, Peter and John had to start again gathering disciples.
Why? Because many did not remain in faith.
The great ups and downs of faith accompany us as well.
They challenge us to remain steadfast in Christ – not only in times of miracles, but also in times of trial.
